Pinkwashing

October 9, 2010 by laceyswartz 3 Comments

This post was inspired by a recent discussion with some other green-minded people about greenwashing and pinkwashing in the personal care industry.  Of course, both problems are found in virtually every industry these days, not just the personal care industry.

Many people have heard the term ‘greenwashing’ already.  It’s when a company markets its product or service as greener than it really is in order to capitalize on the growing interest in green living, rather than make clear and honest marketing claims motivated by a genuine desire to contribute to the overall health of people and the planet above their desire for profit.

However, not as many have considered the problem of ‘pinkwashing’ yet.  So, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I’d like to introduce you to the term.  The best definition I’ve found is this: “pinkwashing: a term used to describe the activities of companies and groups that position themselves as leaders in the struggle to eradicate breast cancer while engaging in practices that may be contributing to rising rates of the disease.”

A desire for profit is not necessarily the problem here; everyone needs to make a living through profits of some sort.  The problem lies in the ethical decisions and heart motivations behind the profit-making.  And these issues can only be unearthed by asking questions.  So, before you reach into your wallet to buy that next pink-packaged product to support the fight against breast cancer, you might want to do a little digging.  The simplest place to start if it is a personal care item: look at its ingredient list.

Homemade Baby Food

October 4, 2010 by laceyswartz 5 Comments

A post of encouragement to all my fellow moms and soon-to-be moms of infants…

Making homemade baby food was one of my first green lifestyle choices. How about you? Despite what many instinctively think, making your own baby food is not that hard. Seriously, I am one of the most ‘culinarily’ challenged people on the planet. My husband does most of our cooking because he really enjoys it, whereas I can just get by when I have to. But I make the baby food in our house, so if I can do it, anyone can. And the benefits are entirely worth the effort. Below are just a few.

#1 – As with grown-up food, fresh is always better than processed, both in terms of health and taste. Doubt it? Taste for yourself. Try the jarred bananas vs a freshly fork-mashed (so easy) banana. Or for a real treat, open up a grocery store jar of baby food “meat.”  Whoa…

#2 – Significant cost savings. The first baby food veggie I ever made was a butternut squash. Out of one $3 squash, I got the equivalent of 20+ baby food jars. Do the math. Sweet!

#3 – Keeps extra jars, lids, and plastic/foil/cardboard packaging out of the global waste stream. Remember, recycle is the last option of “reduce, reuse, and recycle.” Trash reduction comes first, and making your own baby food is a great place to start.

Again, so worth the effort – and it’s not even that big an effort. I used to (and will again come May or June) take a Saturday afternoon and make up huge batches at a time to last most of the month. Or, you can take less time more often as you wish.

Blog Launch

September 30, 2010 by laceyswartz Leave a Comment

OK, here we go.  I have been talking about doing a blog for months now, and thanks to my friends Jacob & Meghan Smith at Whiteboard Media, I’m finally getting started. My goal is to provide a valuable site for those who want to begin or continue their own journeys into organic, natural, holistic, green, sustainable – however you personally want to phrase it – living.

I’m no guru, just a mom on my own journey; but I love to research and dig to get to the bottom of things, and I love to interact with others and their ideas on a wide variety of topics in such a way that, hopefully, we all grow for having shared some time together. My desire for this blog is that it will become a supportive online environment where: 1- I can share tips, resources, thoughts, and ideas that I have found helpful along my own green journey, and 2- anyone who has helpful input of their own will share as well.

Here’s to everyone learning and supporting one another as we go.  Click here if you’d like to know a bit more about my story.
