Babymoon Prep

May 21, 2013 by laceyswartz 2 Comments

Sigh.  I can’t keep up with posts lately.

Of course, I’m not really a blogger – I’m a WAHM consultant with a ‘mixed-use’ (personal and business) blog for occasional update posts – but I’ve been hoping to post maybe once a week.  Can’t even do that lately…

I don’t know how my professional blogger friends keep up with writing daily!  I so admire them.  🙂

And there is SO much – especially on the personal news front – that I want to write about and share…  But just don’t have the time right now to get it all out in writing.

On top of normal family and work life, I am co-hosting a big probiotics teleseminar with Adrienne Urban from Whole New Mom and have a lot of back-end prep work to do for that…

Plus realizing that, wow, we only 3ish more weeks until Baby #5 is due.  I really need to carve out the time to prepare for this whole new experience of a home birth.  It’s not at all like with my other kids where I was able to just keep going, going, going until contractions started, we went to the hospital, and everything was set up and ready for us and such.

As much as this is ‘extra work’ in one sense, I am SUPER excited to experience birth from a whole different perspective this time around.

Two of my inspiring friends on this home birth journey include Sarah from Real Food Outlaws and Erika from A Heart More Focused (and many others who aren’t necessarily online).

At some point, I’ll update you on this journey from ‘the other side’ – as well as being able to update you on all the news developing with our move to London.

But for now, one day at a time, and probably not many blog updates from me for a while.

Hugs to all!  🙂

Really Organic?

April 29, 2013 by laceyswartz Leave a Comment

I probably don’t have to tell this community of readers that “natural” is basically a meaningless word in most marketing claims these days.  It can mean anything from synthetically derived chemicals to genetically modified foods – neither of which I would consider natural.  And when you cross over from the food world to the personal care world, the term is even more loosely used.

But what about organic?

In the food world, organic claims are regulated, although there are an increasing number of issues with the USDA National Organic Program, for sure (which makes me all the more grateful to know and trust Narelle Chenery personally and know that her products are certified to the more stringent Australian organic standards).

But in the personal care world, organic claims are NOT regulated – and consequently subtly misleading, as well as blatantly greenwashed claims abound.

Did you know that there are multiple, manufacturer-made standards vying to become “the” organic standard for personal care and cosmetic products?  And that they all allow ingredients and processing methods that are not allowed in organic food standards?

Here are just a few “catch phrases” of which to be mindful.  Sure, everyone needs a quick and simple way to describe products for first impressions, but buyer beware!  You must ask more questions and dig.

Brand names such as “So-and-So Organics” or claims of “Made with Organic Ingredients” – Often means they use some organic ingredients, but they may also use other toxic synthetic ingredients.

Eco-cert Compliant – Considered the most lenient of the competing cosmetic standards, only 10% of a total product formulation is required to be certified organic (to the food standards) in order to claim that a finished product is “certified organic” by Eco-Cert.  An “Eco-cert compliant” ingredient is anything that could not actually be certified organic by itself but is allowed in an Eco-cert approved product.

“100% Certified Organic Ingredients” – In the food world, this would mean that 100% of the finished product formulation is certified organic, not just some of the ingredients.  In the personal care world, it is often manipulated to imply this same total product percentage, but can actually mean that only that the ingredients that happen to be certified organic are “100% certified” – as if they could be somehow partially certified!  Do you see the subtle twist on words and meaning?  Any given ingredient is either certified or not – there is no 60% certified.  Likewise, finished products are either certified or they’re not to various percentages (such as the 100% or 95% standards in the food standards).  This phrase is intended to make you think that 100% of the ingredients, and thus the total formulation, are/is certified organic, when all it really means is that the certified ingredients are certified.

If you want a truly organic (truly natural) product, then the bottom line is this: Whenever you see any organic, or even “certified organic” claim, you really have to ask “certified by whom, to what standards exactly, why, and how?”  The company or representative should be forthcoming and logical in the explanation of their standards and usage of terminology.

And then, be sure to read the ingredient labels to make sure everything matches up with what you’re told.

One of the things that most impressed me about Miessence when I first found them in 2010 was their transparency, commitment to education, and the fact that they used these words the way I do as a customer, not the way the industry does as manufacturers.  I loved that!

For a short but excellent discussion on the terms “natural” and “organic” in the personal care industry, check out the first video here.  And for a quick overview explanation of exactly which products in the Miessence range are certified to which standards and why, check out the second video here (note: Narelle has also added a dish concentrate to the line since this video came out, which does use one green chemistry, non-toxic, renewably sourced synthetic ingredient to tackle tough dish grease).

Sustainable Home

April 22, 2013 by laceyswartz Leave a Comment

Guest post by Erin Demory

The concept of sustainability is best defined simply as “meeting our current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”  In honor of Earth Day this month, here are some tips for creating a more sustainable home. It is always good to learn new ways to reduce our consumption and burden on the earth, and also to review more common practices that regularly reminded us of the importance of our commitment on this journey together.

Yard and Garden: A garden is a great family project. It puts fresh food on the table and helps reduce the amount you need to buy at the grocery, cutting down on transportation which uses fuel and creates pollution. Growing it yourself is healthier, more economical, and fun!   Instead of sending more to the landfill, start a compost pile or bin with leaves, yard debris, and food waste. Over time and with proper care, you will be rewarded with fertile compost for your garden. Rain barrels are a wonderful way to conserve water. They collect runoff rainwater which can be used at a later time, especially in the yard, garden, for washing cars, pets, and dirty little feet after playtime.

Sustainable Inside: Inside the house, consider water saving shower heads, low flow toilets, and water efficient appliances. Sometimes just fixing leaky pipes can save thousands of gallons of water. When it is time to replace appliances, consider more energy efficient models. Hanging clothes to dry can save energy and money on your electric bill, and it can be fun for little helpers! Save energy and money by weather-stripping windows and finding ways to let natural light in during the winter and shade in during the summer (skylights or landscaping around the house with deciduous trees).

Reduce/Reuse/Recycle: In the reduce, reuse, recycle triangle, recycling is actually the least desirable action item. It is much better than adding trash to the landfill, but reusing items that still have some life in them is much better for the environment, and finding ways to reduce your consumption is even better.

Make Wiser Purchasing Choices: There are more sustainable products on the shelves every day. Look for products you can reuse and are less of a burden on the environment. Examples: Glass water bottles and re-usable lunch containers, recycled paper products, rechargeable batteries, products made from renewable materials, and cloth diapers.

Non-toxic household cleaners: Chemical cleaners, and even many “natural” cleaners contain synthetics which go down our drains and into the water supply. Some are persistent, carcinogenic, and toxic and can accumulate in the environment and be dangerous to animals and people. Consider DIY cleaners with vinegar, baking soda, essential oils, lemon juice, etc…or go with a trusted brand of organic cleaners, such as the Miessence MiEnviron products.

Non-toxic body products: As with the above mentioned cleaners, many body care products on the market contain harmful chemicals. Of the 10,000+ ingredients on the market which are used in body care products, 89% have not been well tested for safety and many are known environmental toxins. Sometimes deciphering what is truly safe and eco-friendly can be tricky due to greenwashing and the lack of regulation in the market. Just reach out to your Miessence Representative who will be happy to assist.

Eat organic: Organic food is a better choice for our bodies and the Earth. Organic food production has been around for thousands of years and is the sustainable choice for the future. Modern agricultural practices are typically destructive to the environment through widespread use of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and fertilizers and have resulted in drastic environmental damage in many parts of the world.

Get Involved: Many cities have a sustainability institute or local non-profit organization promoting  sustainably awareness and programs. Reach out and get involved with your local group to meet other like-minded folks and learn more ways to create a more sustainable lifestyle and home.

Happy Earth Day Everyone!

“Just a thought…not everyone is on facebook or twitter. This makes the raffle inaccessible to us with limited social-media outlets.  Thanks for hosting this teleseminar!!”

You’re right!  SO sorry I hadn’t thought of that!

OK, so for those who are not on Facebook or Twitter or Pinterest, here is a way for you to get an entry into the raffle!

Common Misunderstanding

March 26, 2013 by laceyswartz Leave a Comment

I don’t know many people who shop only on price.  Price may be a factor certainly, but most people also take into account quality and other value considerations.  And the decisions can become even more complex – and confusing – when one starts looking beyond traditional retail chains for products of better quality and value.  There is a world of options out there!

Often, people assume that products from network marketing companies are automatically overpriced.  And this is based in some truth, as there are plenty of stereotypical network marketing companies out there that really do overprice their products to the end customer.  But we also find products in retail stores that are overpriced for their quality.  So what’s the difference?

Frequently, the assumption is that network marketing products are higher priced because of the two or more levels of distributors paid on the sale of the product (which is paid as such because of the time and effort put into training new reps by more experienced reps).  But, what most people fail to remember is that multiple levels of distribution are paid on the sale of virtually every product imaginable.  In any traditional retail chain there are warehouses, wholesalers, national, regional, and local retailers, and advertisers.  Even in the case where one is buying direct from a local artisan of some sort, advertising costs are factored into the price of the product – or should be if the artisan plans to stay in business.

So, is the distributor network really any different from normal price mark-ups in other methods of distribution?  It shouldn’t be, if network marketing is done properly and sustainably.  If run properly, a sustainable network marketing company will offer products that are competitive in the overall market place for comparable quality.  If the price is greater, the quality should be demonstrably greater.  If the base product quality is the same and the price is still greater, there should be other demonstrable value considerations – such as customer service or sustainable and ethical business considerations.

I continually keep my eyes open for products of similar quality to the Miessence brand, and so far, the other ‘organic’ products I have come across are either: a) less expensive but lower quality in either the ingredient purity or the product functionality, and do not offer the same level of customer service and sustainable business impact, b) similarly priced but again not as high quality in terms of ingredient purity or product functionality, or with regard to service and sustainability values, or c) similar quality in terms of ingredients or functionality (rarely in service and sustainability) but more expensive…  And d) nothing of the same ingredient and functional quality, plus overall service and sustainability value, that also offers referral benefits that can help customers earn free products.

I’m married to the principles, not a brand, but as I continue to run across and research other brands, Miessence continues to prove itself a leader, both in the network marketing arena and the larger competitive marketplace in general.

Liquid Prenatal

March 22, 2013 by laceyswartz Leave a Comment

OK, this week has been a bit crazy (in a good way, but just unusually busy getting things ready for our upcoming free teleseminar on probiotics), so it’ll have to be a super quick post here…

Thought I’d just share a fun experience from my journey toward a home birth with a midwife (due mid June)…

My dear friend Sarah, from Real Food Outlaws, made some loose leaf, specially blended pregnancy tea for me when she first heard my baby #5 news last fall.  I was super grateful because Sarah really knows her stuff when it comes to herbs.  🙂

What was even more fun though, was when I shared the ingredient list with my awesome midwife, and she said, “Oh yeah, that’s like a liquid prenatal vitamin right there by itself.”

Love it!

I didn’t need any more proof as to Sarah’s awesomeness, but it’s always neat to have such ringing endorsements.  🙂

While I love and respect the OBs who caught my babies #1-4 (I did not decide on a home birth because of any complaint with them), and certainly still appreciate the service they provide when modern medicine is truly needed, it is so uplifting taking this journey this time around with folks who are tuned in to and working in harmony with the abundant provision for all our needs found right within nature itself.

Here is a post from Sarah with a recipe for pregnancy tea.

You can either get the herbs from a reliable source such as Mountain Rose Herbs and make it yourself, or you can order premade from Sarah here on her poppy swap site.  She has a ton of other great herbal/medicine teas available as well.  Check out her site!

Cheers all!  🙂

Organic Anti-Aging

March 13, 2013 by laceyswartz 16 Comments

Updated 7/2/13 – see note below.

Read to the end (or if you’re short on time, scroll to the end) for an offer of free skin care samples, certified organic to food grade standards. Oh, and don’t miss the testimonial from one of my clients. 🙂

These days, claims abound promising eternal youth and the eradication of wrinkles in a matter of days, hours, or even minutes.  The messages tap into our fears of getting older and so many of our insecurities…

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to age gracefully or taking good care of one’s skin.  However, people are beginning to wake up to the fact that there are numerous unintended and detrimental consequences to the many “quick fix” beauty products on the market.  IF they actually deliver real results (many ads use airbrushed photos such as the picture above – how misleading!  No, that is not a picture claiming to show you results you’ll get from the samples offered below – it’s an example of the unethical marketing tactics used all too commonly today), most do so with a heavy dose of synthetic chemicals created specifically to manipulate the natural function of the skin in very unnatural ways.  The glut of plumper and filler products on the market most often leave your skin physically in a less healthful state (let alone the fact that these “band-aid” approaches rarely encourage people to deal with the underlying lifestyle issues of premature aging or our very real and normal emotional insecurities surrounding the topic of aging) – and may very well be contributing to the rising rates of cancer and other such diseases suspected to be triggered by the “synthetic chemical soup” we live in today.

In their tips for choosing safe cosmetics, the Breast Cancer Fund lists anti-aging creams with synthetic chemicals as the top ‘general product category’ offender to avoid.  They also suggest using truly natural/organic products…  AND, not surprisingly, watching out for fake natural and organic claims.  The natural and organic segment is the fastest growing segment of the cosmetic industry today, and as the market increases, unfortunately so does the number of “cheater brands” out there.  The Organic Consumers Association has a good resource on cheater brands and legit brands; however, unfortunately the cheater list should be much bigger – it has grown significantly even in just the past few years…

The best tip I can give you is to be a super skeptic and ask lots of questions.  Even if you hear “certified organic” these days, you really have to ask, “Certified by whom and to what standards exactly?”  And THEN, read the labels to make sure the answer you get matches the facts on the label.  If you have any doubts, feel free to run an ingredient list from any brand past my eyes – I’m happy to give thumbs up to any brand that does not use toxic ingredients AND uses truthful marketing claims.

Today, I’m excited to be able to offer free samples of truly certified organic skin care products for dry/mature skin to new subscribers who submit the request form below.  Yes, this is my favorite brand for whom I now also do representative work, but I’m first and foremost their happy customer and am married to the principles not the brand – if I found something better, I’d switch and tell all my clients and readers (like I did almost 3 years ago when I found Miessence).   So the disclaimer: yes, if you choose to order through me, you will be helping to support my business, which in turn supports my family of 6 (soon 7) on so many levels. 🙂

What I loved about Miessence when I found them as a customer myself was:

  • Their highest level of purity and verifiable claims (certified organic to international food grade standards);
  • The fact that they were the first to achieve this standard in 2001 (ie, they are truly committed to organics not just riding a bandwagon trend);
  • Their very upfront and clear explanations of which products meet which standards and why (see the 2nd video here),
  • Their natural, holistic approach to skin care, using the purest organic ingredients, and with an educational emphasis on internal factors that help to reduce the chances of premature aging, such as antioxidant real-food-only nutrition (I do love their antioxidant superfood product)
  • AND… their results!  After three weeks of digging, investigating, and verifying their claims, I finally tried the products and was thrilled to find that they work at least as well, and more often better, than anything else I’d ever tried – without the synthetics. Three years later, I still love the results, smells, feel…  🙂
  • PLUS, everything else they do as an ethically and sustainably run business – can’t possibly list it all out here, but it’s a LOT. The total value of the products and their impact for good in the world is incredible for the mid-range retail price point… not to mention the 20% off all the time discount option and referral benefits for customers, and… Did I mention there are too many positives to list them all here?!  🙂

So, back to the Miessence skin care products specifically… Here is a short video highlighting the skin care products and their uniqueness in the marketplace…

–

Here is what just one of my clients, with a history of very sensitive skin, recently had to say about these products…

“LOVE THEM 😉 My skin has never felt any better, no adverse reactions. Love the plumpness it adds to my skin, my skin drinks it like water. Tiny forehead lines have decreased in depth! When washing my face the scent of products makes me feel like I’m having a mini face spa treatment. My husband likes that my face feels baby soft. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT! Thank You.” ~ Machell H, in Pennsylvania USA

Fiji Trip

March 11, 2013 by laceyswartz 2 Comments

Now that it’s officially public news, I can put up a quick blog post announcement…  🙂

Last Wednesday night, I’m standing in the spice aisle of the grocery store to get cumin for my husband, who was at home making chili, when my cell phone rings…

It was Jacqui from Miessence’s Home Office calling to tell me that I won their Birthday Blast contest – and an all expense paid trip to Fiji this fall!

Wow…  Wow!  I’m humbled, shocked, excited, thankful, and so blessed.  🙂

If you’ve followed any of my posts/articles about Sustainable Network Marketing, you know that I’m really passionate about a zero hype, zero pressure business culture.   One of the best parts about this Fiji trip is the amazing feeling I have knowing that not one new customer or team member was “stalked” or “hyped” into an order for this.  Everyone found me in various ways, off or online, all genuinely excited to try Miessence’s products, and it was (and is) an honor to serve each one to that end.

A growing number of companies out there claim that their personal care and cosmetic products are “certified organic” – implying truly, totally, 100% natural and clean – when they are either a- actually NOT certified organic at all (they may just use some certified organic ingredients along with synthetics), or b- certified to a cosmetic organic standard that allows synthetic chemicals that would never be allowed in food grade standards.

When you hear a “certified organic” claim, you really have to ask, “Certified organic by whom and to what standards exactly?”

It is such an honor to work with a company that has:

– Ingredients, labels, and certifications to back up their organic claims;
– Clear, upfront, & no-hype education on which products meet which standards and why;
– A genuine heart and mission to support sustainable living in every way possible; AND
– Fantastic products that work so, so well.

Thank you all for being part of my crazy fun journey of life, ministry, and business.  I so greatly appreciate each and every subscriber, referral, customer, and business partner from all over the world.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

Most sincerely,
Lacey 🙂

3-Day Detox

March 11, 2013 by laceyswartz Leave a Comment

Guest post by Erin Demory, from ClearOrganics.com

With the new year in full swing and a new season upon us, many people want to shed pounds, eliminate built-up environmental toxins, ditch unhealthy habits, and clear the mental fog that may be contributing to a sluggish body and out-of-sync feeling.  Revitalizing and cleansing our bodies can be done through various types of detoxification processes. Detoxification is about resting, cleaning and nourishing the body from the inside out. By removing and eliminating toxins, then feeding your body with healthy nutrients, detoxification can help protect you from disease and renew your ability to maintain optimum health. Some of the benefits of a good detoxification plan are: improved organ function, healthier skin, increased energy, reduction in allergies, a kick-start to weight loss, and improved mental clarity. Our bodies already have a built in system in place for detoxing – through breathing, perspiration, urination, and bowel movements – however these days, most people are exposed to such excessive amounts of environmental pollutants, stress, and diets heavy in processed foods, that our bodies could really use some extra help.

Where to start? Many experts recommend that all of us detox at least once a year. Some people even find it beneficial to detox 2-4 times a year, for example, at the onset of a new season. But, with so many different plans, methods, and theories on detox out there, it can be overwhelming to know the best route for you. For example, plans can last anywhere from 3 – 30 days, they can be liquid only diets, fruit and veggie only, or elimination detox (commonly used for identifying allergens), and some plans include special supplements or herbs, colonics or laxatives.  The majority of us have fast paced, busy schedules filled with family, work, extracurricular and community activities. If you are like me, you probably don’t want to make huge sacrifices and disruptive changes to be healthy, such as starvation diets, difficult meal plans, or regimens that require staying close to the house for several days (or close to the bathroom rather). The good news is that none of that is necessary to perform a healthy body detoxification.  A simple super-clean eating plan that focuses on whole, clean foods can do wonders for your body, and it is absolutely possible to do it in just three days, such as over the weekend. If you can stretch it out over 5 days, you’ll be feeling even better results!

First, here are some good ground rules for any effective detox plan.  Note: hopefully some of you are practicing these year-round already, and if you aren’t, maybe after introducing them via the detox you will chose to continue on with them – you really will feel so much better if you incorporate them into your lifestyle.  🙂

1.      Lighten the toxic load on your body: Try eliminating caffeine, tobacco, refined sugars, saturated fats, and processed foods. All of these are obstacles to cleansing, healing, and feeling your best. Also, reduce or eliminate your exposure to chemical based household cleaners and personal care products which are laden with harmful toxins that can build up in your body and potentially create a burden to your organs and even long term damage. Instead, try making your own cleaners with simple, inexpensive, and effective ingredients such as vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, and essential oils. Recipes are easily found on the internet. For your skin, hair and body, consider products that are completely free of harmful, synthetic chemicals and try to chose certified organic to the highest standard, such as those available through Miessence Certified Organics (please ask your personal Miessence Rep for more details). Not only will you be doing your body a favor, but also the earth!

2.      Reduce the level of stress in your life: stress creates hormones which are released into your body, and in large amounts the hormones can be toxic. It is recommended that during a body detox period, we also detoxify ourselves of stressful life situations. Meditating, Yoga or other exercise for 1 hour a day, and a concentrated focus on positive thinking can help reduce stress. Very strenuous exercise should be avoided during detox.

3.      Drink Water and Flush Toxins: Drink plenty of water – 64 oz or more a day will help to keep your body hydrated and assist in flushing out the extra toxins that are being kicked up. Some people also like to visit a sauna, practice hydrotherapy, or use detox foot baths to further assist their bodies with the drawing out the toxins.

4.      Rest: During detox your body is working hard to eliminate those built-up toxins from your organs and tissues. So don’t be surprised if you feel a little drained and not at your best. Rest assured,  you will soon! Help your body out during this time by allowing it plenty of rest.

Now for meal suggestions. As I said before, focusing on whole, natural, clean foods is the key. That means first and foremost staying away from processed! Additionally I would suggest choosing organic whenever possible, so as to ensure that you are not exposing your body to pesticides and GMO’s from conventional foods. Below are 3 or more options for each meal to take you through a 3 day plan:

1.      Breakfast Options: steel cut oats topped with nuts and fresh berries; egg white omelet with fresh veggies inside; Greek yogurt topped with flax seeds and fresh fruit.

2.      Snack Options (2x per day): fresh apple, orange or other fruit of choice; ½ cup yogurt topped with nuts and banana; slice of whole grain bread topped with butter of your choice (peanut, almond, sunflower, etc…); hard boiled egg; handful of baby carrots; ½ cup of raw nuts.

3.      Lunch Options: Fresh baby spinach salad topped with grape tomatoes, red onions, nuts and a dressing consisting of lemon juice and olive oil (or flax seed oil if on hand); wild caught salmon or tuna fish (may opt for canned for ease/convenience) over dark greens with  ½ cup garbanzo beans and lemon/oil dressing; whole grain bread or tortilla wrapped up with fresh avocado, dark greens, tomatoes, red onion and a tsp of Dijon mustard.

4.      Dinner Options: Talapia (or your choice of healthy and sustainable fish from the smart seafood guide provided by the Food and Water Watch organization), seasoned with lemon and olive oil, served with brown rice and steamed broccoli; lean ground turkey burger topped with sauteed mushrooms and onions (if you feel you need bread, make sure it is whole grain) served with a large green salad with balsamic vinegar and olive/flax seed oil; boneless, skinless baked chicken breast with fresh lemon juice, 2 tsp olive oil and 1 tbsp of capers or green olives served with steamed greens such as spinach, kale or collards (if desired, add a little garlic, onion, and homemade veggie or chicken stock for flavoring greens).

In addition to following the above meal options, I would also suggest doubling your daily dosage of Miessence Superfoods during the detox period. After all, these supplements are simply certified organic, raw, vegan, and whole-food based supplements which are packed with important benefits to your body. They are both the perfect addition to a detox plan AND great for normal daily maintenance. If you have not yet tried the Miessence Superfoods, consider taking the 10 day Vitality Challenge (ask your Rep for details) which is a wonderful introduction to the Fermented Foods Probiotic, Alkalising Deep Green, and Berry Radical Antioxidant Superfoods.

Happy detoxing everyone – wishing you an abundance of good health and wellness!

Organic Facial

March 6, 2013 by laceyswartz Leave a Comment

A quick post today…

I could watch these 10 videos all day…  OK, I really only needed to watch them once or twice, but I could listen to them in the background of my day all day…   The music is so relaxing…  🙂

But even better is to actually experience the organic spa facial with the Miessence products – certified organic to international food grade standards.  I certainly don’t do all 10 steps every day – most days I stick with the basic, quick, 2-minute, 3-step routine – but I thoroughly enjoy this (and the results!) when I do it.

Sit back and enjoy the video series below.  (And if you’d like to order these organic spa facial products, click here.  An order of $150 value or more automatically gets 20% off and a free Lifestyle Member account for 20% off all future purchases of any size.)
